TMJ Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosing TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder requires that we take digital X-rays and use advanced imaging systems to take a closer look at what is happening to the jaw. While learning about the difficulties you’re facing is important, these detailed, high-resolution images allow us to visualize the movement and function of your jaw so that we can create a treatment plan that is personalized to you and that will produce effective results.

Occlusal Splints

To improve the movement of your jaw and minimize pressure and pain to these joints, we can have a customized occlusal splint made. Worn either throughout the day or at night while you sleep (or both), you can expect to notice an improvement in how your jaw moves and feels over time. It’s possible that popping and clicking will cease, and if you struggle with bruxism, this device will also cut down on the wear and tear of your tooth enamel.

Equilibration/ Occlusal Adjustments

If your bite is the culprit behind your TMJ/TMD, it may be required that we perform what is known as equilibration or occlusal adjustment. This process involves gently altering certain teeth so that your bite comes together correctly and eliminates unwanted pressure on your jaw joints. This can create a more comfortable bite.
