What Are Dental Implants?

Designed to mimic the natural function of tooth roots, dental implants look like small screws and fit within the jawbone. Made of titanium (in most cases), they fuse well with bone tissues, creating a firm foundation for what will eventually support your new teeth. Depending on how many teeth you’re missing, you’ll receive an implant crown, bridge, or denture.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Consultation: The first step is to undergo a scheduled consultation. Our board-certified prosthodontist or board-certified periodontist will examine your mouth, decide how many dental implants you need, and go over the kind of restoration you’ll receive. If necessary, our qualified team of specialists can perform bone and tissue grafts should they be required.
  • Surgery: Minor oral surgery is required to ensure the implant posts are positioned correctly. Our in-house periodontist or prosthodontist, both of whom are board-certified, will perform the procedure.
  • Osseointegration and Abutment: Osseointegration is the next step once your procedure is complete. This can take between 4-6 months before returning to our office to have your metal abutments put into place. These are small appliances that connect the implant post to the restoration.
  • Final Restoration: During the process, digital impressions will be captured by our team so that lab technicians can fabricate your new teeth. When ready for placement, you will have your customized crown, denture, or bridge secured in place on top of your implants.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

If you’re an adult who is missing at least one tooth, there’s a good chance you can receive dental implants. Although each person’s case is unique, and some are free to pursue implant surgery right away, others may require preparatory treatments to strengthen and improve the health of the mouth first. For example, bone grafting, gum disease treatment, a sinus lift, or even tooth extraction may be required before receiving dental implants.

The good news is that no matter how many teeth you’re missing, you can expect that we will thoroughly explain the process of receiving your dental implants, including the timeline, cost, and versatility of this tooth replacement option.

Missing One Tooth

When only one tooth is missing, we can install a single dental implant post into your jawbone. This fuses over time and creates a solid foundation for your new dental crown, which will be fabricated according to the specifications provided by our team.

Missing Multiple Teeth

When multiple missing teeth need replacement, an implant bridge can be used instead of a traditional one. Unlike those that are attached with the help of healthy abutment teeth, a bridge held in place by implants allows you to maintain the natural structure of your regular teeth. There is no altering required, and you can enjoy a longer-lasting set of teeth.

Missing All of Your Teeth

Traditional dentures can achieve the same goal of creating a complete smile, but implant dentures don’t have to be replaced every few years. Instead, using between 4 and 6 implant posts, we can place them within the jawbone and attach the custom denture on top to create a smile that will last 30+ years.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants
