Scaling & Root Planing

When gum pockets form as a result of advanced gum disease, it is imperative that treatment be administered as soon as possible to avoid damage to the bone. With a two-part process known as scaling and root planing, our in-house periodontist can scale your teeth and gums to remove existing plaque and tartar before smoothing out your tooth roots to encourage reattachment and healing. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, this process may require multiple appointments.

Arestin Antibiotic Therapy

Used in combination with scaling and root planing, antibiotic therapy helps with the healing process while also eliminating any remnants of bacteria. Dr. Govostes will apply a medication called Arestin to the gum pockets, allowing it to absorb and disperse over several weeks. During this time, it will eliminate any existing bacteria and encourage the gums to heal more thoroughly.

Chao Pinhole Technique

If gum recession is the result of advanced periodontal (gum) disease, you may need what is known as the Chao Pinhole Technique. Our team will use specialized instruments to loosen the receding gum tissues so that they can be pulled to cover any exposed tooth roots. Although it sounds complex, the process itself is fairly easy and minimally invasive; in fact, the recovery time is quite short, allowing you to return to normal activity much sooner.
